Moshi

Moshi is the capital of Kilimanjaro region in the northeastern Tanzania. The city is situated on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, a dormant volcano that is the highest mountain in Africa. The name Moshi has been reported to refer to the smoke that emanates from the nearby mountain.

Moshi is one of the tourism centers in the northern safari circuit of Tanzania. The closest tourism spots include Kilimanjaro National Park, Mkomazi National Park and Lake Chala. There are also several waterfalls, natural springs, and tropical forests.

 

Our Recommended 2 Days Trip:

Day 1: Marangu Waterfall-coffee Tour and Chaga Caves (Kikuletwa)

At around 08:00 am we’ll start riding from Hotel Arusha or Moshi to Marangu gate (1,900 meters above sea level), the starting point for Kilimanjaro treks via the Marangu route. Get a short briefing on the history of Mt. Kilimanjaro and take some pictures at the gate.

Then ride down to our second stop about 4km to the coffee farm. Visit a small coffee farm where you will learn about how the coffee is grown, harvested, and processed locally. Try your own hand at processing, roasting, and preparing a fresh cup of coffee.

After your cup of coffee, we’ll continue the ride to the Ndoro waterfalls.

You will ride on the beautiful small plantations of bananas and coffee while enjoying the green landscape. When we’ll get there you will the option to enter and swim in the cold water from the springs of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

From the waterfall we’ll drive to the Chagga underground caves and the Chagga live museum about 2km away. Take few minutes of learning the history of the caves and visit the museum which will give you the insight history of the Chagga tribe life.

Break for lunch, could be a hot or packed lunch according to your prior arrangement.

After lunch continue to the Blacksmith to learn how this community makes iron tools like spears and many more.

Then drive back to Urafiki Hotel in Moshi
(Optional to arrange a driver to take you to a local bar for a night out).

 

Day 2: Chemka (Kikuletwa) Hot-Springs

After a warm breakfast You’ll depart from your hotel and make the drive to Maji Moto (also known as Chemka hot spring).

This scenic drive takes you off the tourist trail and offers a glimpse into local life: bustling markets, local farms and many more.

The Chemka Hot Springs are an oasis in the hinterland of the Kilimanjaro region, situated 40 kilometers from Moshi. At these idyllic underground springs with the crystal clear, turquoise water, you can enjoy the perfect rest after a strenuous Kilimanjaro climb or adventurous wilderness safari. But also for day-trippers, they are an ideal destination. Whether you’re old, young, alethic or not, the Chemka Hot Springs invite you to linger, swim and explore.

The pond is very deep, in some places up to 10 meters, but the water is so clear that you can see the bottom well all the time.

On the shore under lush trees you can camp, enjoy your snacks, or soak up the sun while seeing the monkeys jumping between the trees.

From there we’ll drive back to your Hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
